SAP Training - 5 useful tips before you enroll

SAP Training is a significant investment. No matter whether your company is sponsoring it or not - it is important that you’ll make the most out of it.

After participating in four different SAP training classes in different locations, I have decided to put together these quick tips that will help you to pick the best available training classes, which will eventually render a positive return on investment for you and your company.

The following tips are relevant when picking both functional (CRM, HR, SD, FI etc’) or technical (BW, XI, Portal etc’) classes.

Pick the right training level

Are you a newbie or experienced consultant? Do you master your module and need a short “delta” SAP training to get up to speed with a new version or your basics need some reinforcement? Do you aim for an SAP certification ?

Pick the right training format

Do you require a class-based course or does an SAP online training session suit your training needs? Online training is much cheaper, however the caveat is that SAP online training is mostly suitable for beginners.

Pick the right SAP version

SAP do not release major versions too often, but newer versions tend to introduce new features which you would like to be familiar with. My advice is that you always strive to be trained on the newest stable version.

Pick the right instructor

Needless to say, a proficient instructor can make a huge difference in your overall training experience. Therefore it’s imperative you touch base with the relevant training center and make sure that your instructor meets the following qualifications:

  • Has at least 2 years of hands-on project experience with the relevant module.
  • Has practical experience with the SAP version that will be used in training.
  • Masters the language used for delivering the training.
  • Has previous SAP training delivery

In certain cases, I recommend you to try to touch base (via email) with instructor before enrolling and make sure he meets those qualifications.

Mind the logistics

Participating in SAP training often involves some logistics such as flight and accommodation arrangements. So here’s my advice on logistics:

  • Make sure you arrive to your hotel a day before training starts. This will allow you to rest well before training starts.
  • Unless you love to get up early, make sure that your hotel is within walking distance to the SAP training center. If that not the case, make sure your hotel offers free shuttles to the training center.
  • Make sure your hotel offers broadband Internet access.

Wish you an enjoyable training session.
